How brilliant is this? A Deconstructed Sushi Roll? You know i’m always on a lookout for novelty in foods, not as much as ingredients because i’m into really small number of super-healthy foods; but novelty in the way of food preparations. When you eat only veggies and fish, its super hard to be innovative, and I can’t be bored with anything in life, including food. Trying to think of new ways to combine food, new recipes, it can be draining.

That’s why I’m always surfing the web for new ideas. Although I eat eggs and yogurt from the dairy la familia, I try to combine loads of vegan stuff into my meals. And of course, lots and lots of sushi.

I stumbled upon this great idea, the Deconstructed Sushi Roll from the Wild Greens & Sardines Blog, and since I love Bowls, as I wrote in my last bite Post, this was pretty much heaven for me!

decosush2The idea is off the hook! The author of the blog is “complaining how she can’t make a good sushi roll if her life depended on it! But since she likes the actual ingredients that go in it, and can’t make hers to stay together, she decided to slam everything that goes into your favorite sushi roll, in the bowl!

How beautiful does this look?! Sushi is simply an art, even if just piled up like this. Amen!

This is what went into the Wild Greens & Sardines sushi bowl –

  • Quinoa (or rice, brown or white)
  • Avocado
  • Watermelon radish
  • Microgreens
  • Toasted nori
  • Crispy shallots (shallots fried in olive oil until crispy)
  • Fried quail eggs, so cute (or substitute chicken eggs)
  • Bonito flakes — dried, aged, and smoked tuna (tastes better than it sounds)
  • Thinly sliced scallions
  • Toasted sesame seeds
  • A sprinkling of the Japanese spice mix, like Shichimi Togarashi
  • Raw & seared tuna
  • All drizzled with a lovely Yuzu Vinaigrette

Other options you can include in your sushi bowl: chives, edamame, thinly sliced cucumber, other seasonal veggies like asparagus, spinach, fresh fava beans, salmon, scallops and/or shrimp.
